A Comfort for the Eye
Stumbling against the canvas grain, he’s drawn
to light and in the end – unsuitable wide thighs
surround his genitals, too oversized –
he is exposed. His shaken head a dawn
of irresistibility: bygones, however gone,
never go by. It’s never done,
this topsyturvy upset-down fold, yet not
withholding this awareness: Behold
this madness not. I witness The Confused Condition
of falling without foresight, of no telling after. Now
this reveals itself, what I preserve by accident:
where space no longer bends to time,
I know, as he, for everlasting sure:
my fall is but a fall, be it endured.
(Poem by Jan van Seters, 1999)
